A little project for Ava’s room….

So we inherited a pretty old chest of drawers from my mother in law and it served a great purpose in Ava’s room (she’s nearly 2!) for all her vests, socks, Pj’s and blankies. It was a mahogany veneer 4 drawer dresser. It housed all her bits with lots of junk thrown on top and the bottom drawer needing some TLC. Here was the piece in question…. IMG_4422[1]   IMG_4424[1]   So you can see, it was in need of a little work.  I’d heard and read great things about “chalk” paint and really loved the look of all the colours available and fancied a little “project”.  I got some tester pots for some wooden letters but in the end opted for French Linen in the Annie Sloan range. I purchased it locally in a little shop in Ennis, Co. Clare called Sonoma. I LOVE that place!! I also purchased some super cool knobs to complete the look. And here it is…….   IMG_4540[1]         And with curtains pulled….. IMG_4539[1]   This little plastic frame from Ikea was totally transformed too…0114861_PE267810_S3 IMG_4541[1]

I used “Duck Egg Blue” for the Ikea frame. I also snatched this little beauty in Sonoma but painted it “Antoinette” as it was practically the same colour as French Linen. IMG_4542[1]   IMG_4427[1]

Here are some more colours available in Sonoma… 1013432_534048036656917_1185188729_n

All the paint work is finished off with a coat of the light wax.  Hey presto…..easy peasy! I suggested chalk painting our 3-year-old painted kitchen cabinets in a grey colour but “himself” is having none of it!  (We’ll see who wins that battle!)

So any plans for making over any old furniture?

Where have I been???

Oh my God, looks like I’ve been gone AWOL!  I haven’t had a blog post since January!! Apologies, but I’ve included a few photos of what has been keeping me so busy.  I’ve started a little venture to go with my obsession with interiors (kids of course!).  These are bespoke wooden letters which can be designed to compliment any colour scheme and embellished accordingly.  They are just over 6″ high and really light so suitable to stick to walls or still sit on a dresser or shelf.  Orders can be taken via email ( or through private message on my Facebook page.

These were for a wedding we attended recently and were a huge hit for the official wedding photos! (excuse my “work space”)

I PROMISE the next post will be sooner with a series of decorating tips for kids rooms and nurseries.  Don’t worry, as always I’ll include lots of photos. I’m also in the middle of a little DIY project so before and after pics will follow too.

Shelving Solutions For Your Childs Room

Now don’t get me wrong…. I really don’t live in Ikea.  Yes I think it’s a useful store but really I’ve only visited a handful of times. When I do, I stock up on the basics and often post pics from it to inspire ideas. Many similar items can be purchased in local DIY stores or the internet but its a great base to get pics from for moodboards etc.

In particular….shelves and storage units!! Need I say more? Has your toddler a collection of books to rival the local library?

I’ve created a collection of shelving ideas suitable for your baby/toddler room. Not only books but photo frames, toys, lamps etc can all decorate these pieces of furniture.

1.  BESTÅ Shelf unit/height extension unit, white € 30.00

2. HEMNES Bookcase, grey-brown € 115.00

3. LIATORP Wall/bridging shelf, white € 125.00

4. RIBBA Picture ledge, white € 7.50

5. HEMNES Bookcase, white € 125.00

6. HEMNES Wall/bridging shelf, grey-brown € 100.00

I’ve even located some pics from Ikea Hackers to show that with a little imagination, your child can really have  a bespoke piece including  a very cute vintage inspired napkin holder!

So no more mess, but would the following picture be a step to far???

(Maybe….but I still love it <3)

Any unusual shelving/storage solutions you’d like to share?

Mood Board – Pink And Green Can Always Be Seen…..

So I think its inevitable that pink is going to feature in most little girls bedrooms. Even if you’re not a very “pink parent” or your little girl is a tomboy, its hard to escape PINK! But there are ways to tone down the princess look if that’s not your bag. Pink and brown were always a favourite of mine….

Pink and Brown

But to go for something a little more natural, and lets face, probably easier to work with regarding tones and shades of items to decorate with I’ve chosen to create a mood board around pinks and greens. Featuring stronger shades as opposed to pastels here is my latest moodboard. Most of this look can be purchased without leaving the house, yup I’ve featured a lot of items from ETSY as its such a wonderful resource with a huge amount of beautiful soft furnishings to choose from.

Pink and Green should definitely be seen

I think the mix of shades of both pinks and greens work really well together without being all matchy, would you find something like this easy to create for a little girl? A great tip its to seek out some cute images on the web and pop them in a frame to match your colour scheme!

Like it?

Mood Board – Good Night Mr. Fox

So, out with the owl and in with the….fox? Maybe the characters of the Gruffalo are each making appearances?  All I know is, Im loving the this foxy theme going on. Completely gender neutral with autumnal colours featuring such as oranges, browns and electric blues.  The basis of this can be prepared well before baby is born with the finishing touches added after the “arrival” if you fancy making a more boyish/girly feel to the room. Easily a theme that can be kept until well into the toddler years.

Hannah’s Room

Baby’s name: Hannah

Age: 4 months old, not a resident yet – maybe in a few weeks.

Mums words: I wanted a girly room that was not too ‘pink’ so that it would grow with her.  My favourite piece is the old cast iron bed which I had when I was young and I suppose it was the inspiration for an elegant room.  It still needs to be painted and the knobs need replacing, so it is a work in progress.

Favourite piece: The cast iron bed, I also adore the decal and I think that it makes the room.  Because it had the pretty little birds on it, I went for the bird theme on the other pictures etc. in the room.
